Personal Reflection

Picture
This poem addresses a topic which I have often thought about. We are so influenced by the outside world, whether by media, people, or ideas, that we develop into very different people than we would have otherwise. I have wondered many times who would I be without these influences. Or more importantly, who was I in my simplest form, when I was a mere newborn? What was my outlook on the world? How did I perceive things? The way the poem addresses the questions is through an abstract picture of the simple mind. It asserts that we are a blank slate with huge potential. I found this idea fascinating. We are not necessarily “someone” from the outset, but rather develop into “someone” both through the influence of people and ideas that surround us. I think that’s something incredibly important to understanding who we are today, and that’s why I chose this poem. Though I try to live a simple, focused life, I must realize that it is the complex influences that make us who we are.
