Seasoning of Life - Attitude

Picture
One of the most difficult steps of the eggroll process was always the seasoning. Often including cloves of garlic, dashes of soy sauce, and a sprinkling of oyster sauce, the seasoning can make or break the eggroll. It is one of the few things that can be truly unique to the chef preparing the eggroll. In other words, the seasoning represents the Chef's own personality reflected in the filling of the eggroll.

The seasoning was quickly added after browning the pork, often while it was still in the wok. Dashes of salt and pepper flew into the wide pan, while other components of the secret recipe were quickly sprinkled in. This seasoning of the meat was always done my grandfather, since the entire eggroll hinged on how well it was done. The wafting smell of seasoned pork filled the building with the delicious scent of authentic Cantonese cuisine. Even the vegetables were seasoned with spices and dashes of sauce that helped created the perfect eggroll filling. Indeed, the seasoning that my grandfather used defined the identity of what Chun's Gourmet Cuisine was all about.

In a similar way, the attitude that one uses in life helps define who they are. Just like seasoning, it reflects your own take on life and is unique to your perspective. It can turn a problem into a victory or a triumph into a tragedy. It is a powerful tool to shape one's life, just as seasoning is used to give the eggroll an identity of its own. I try to live my life with a sense of optimism and virtue that allows me to tackle the problems that life throws at me.

The included poems all deal with issues of attitude and virtue. They analyze attitude and perspective with deep metaphors and literary devices. Included after each poem is some sort of analysis and a short personal reflection.
