Experience- The Filling of My Life

Picture
The heart and soulof a Chun Gourmet eggroll was always found in the light, delicious mixture of tender shredded pork, cool cabbage, water crests, and bamboo shoots. Stir-fried and tossed in massive woks, the piping hot mixture would be piled onto the wonton, ready for preparation. The filling was perhaps one of the most critical pieces of the eggroll, and one of the easiest to get wrong. So many factors and ingredients played into the creation of the mix, it had taken my grandfather a lifetime of cooking experience to get right. There seemed to be a story behind each secret technique, a moment hiding within every ingredient tossed into the wok. The masterful slicing of the bamboo shoots, the light browning of the pork; it was a feat accomplished not just through skill, but through years. As my Grandfather entered his mid-life, he suffered a massive heart attack at a relatively young age. The experience made him decide to forgo all red meat, including pork. However, his dedication to his business was still the focus of his daily life. Ever day, he stood at the wok, personally taste testing the filling, ensuring that it met his expectations. So important was this filling, that he was willing to risk his heart to make sure he got it right.

Those experiences that my Grandfather gained manifested themself in this eggroll filling, the heart and soul of his business. In the same way, my experiences as I age are the foundation of my life, the filling that supports my goals and desires. In this chapter of my poem anthology, I wish to explore what experience is and why it means so much to us. How can we obtain it? As one explores both the tragedy and joy of experience, one discovers himself. Discover your own filling; what has affected your life?

The following poems are reflections of my own thoughts on experience. Each is accompanied with some sort of analysis and response.
